Somerset Mall

In 1993, local newspapers in the Helderberg region carried momentous news. AECI to build shopping giant, the headlines read.

503769a.jpgBuilding operations commenced on the 58-hectare site situated at the intersection of the N2 and the R44 linking Strand, Somerset West and Stellenbosch. Phase 1 of the R150 million project was anchored by one food major, two fashion majors and a 1000-seat cinema complex. 90 upmarket line stores completed the mix and Somerset Mall opened to public acclaim.

In response to research findings, in 1999, Somerset Mall realised that the time was ripe to initiate Phase 2 of the project. The Centre was expanded from 35 000 m² to 56 000 m² bringing the total value of the Mall up to R300 million. The extension opened its doors in August 2000, increasing the total number of retail outlets to more than 160.

The third, and latest, extension unfolded its magnificent wings in November 2004. The need for this extension came from a desire in the community for more family entertainment. Somerset Mall obliged with a 15,000 m² Phase 3 extension that cost R160 million. Somerset Mall offers favourites such as Exclusive Books, Music Moods and Incredible Connection - plus, an international food court, ten-pin bowling alley and a Ster Kinekor cinema which has eight movie theatres. An additional 1,200 parking bays were also provided for new customers.

Strand Golf Club

The new Strand Golf Club opened in 1994 after being relocated from the old course on Gordon’s Bay Road (where Greenways Estate is now). The new championship layout proves an exciting challenge for golfers of all abilities.

golf.jpgIn the intervening years, the course has matured greatly and a feature has been the attention given to the manicuring and maintenance of the surrounds. This is immediately noticeable from the upstairs terrace of the modern clubhouse as you look over the finishing hole and the sparkling water features with the beautiful Hottentots Holland mountains as backdrop.

The prominent features of the course are the abundant water hazards and bunkers, undulating greens and tree-lined fairways. Many of the holes on the back 9 play in semi-links style.

The Club was also awarded by the Complete Golfer as “The Most Improved Course in the Cape for 2007”. An award of which the members are enormously proud.

The Strand Golf Club has been known for its greens over the years which have provided an excellent putting surface. There are several tee boxes (championship, club, senior and ladies) on each hole, which makes for approximately five hundred metre difference between championship tees and club tees over the 18 holes. In 1994, two and a half thousand trees were planted on this course and they are now becoming very much part of play.

The course is situated adjacent to the popular holiday coastal town of the Strand. This area is famed for its long stretch of unspoilt beach.
